The startup aims to reduce stigma and cost with a $999 wearable, though the move raises questions about the accessibility of hearing care.

Hearing tech startup Legato has officially launched its flagship AI-based hearing glasses, known as Legato Frames, according to TechCrunch. The wearable integrates patented hearing-assistance technology into eyewear frames and is priced starting at $999.

Founded in 2024 by Mehul Trivedi and Steve Romine, Legato aims to make hearing care more accessible by targeting the stigma, comfort, and costs associated with traditional hearing aids. TechCrunch reports that the founders bring experience from Bose—where Trivedi led Bose Frames and Romine managed the hearing aids division—as well as roles at EssilorLuxottica and Audicus.

Designed for adults with up to moderate hearing loss, the Legato Frames utilize an AI-powered system to amplify voices while reducing background noise, differing from the directional microphone approach used in traditional aids. The glasses feature a dual-speaker system that reduces sound leakage by 99% just a few inches from the ear. The hardware weighs 34 grams, provides 10-12 hours of battery life, and supports Bluetooth streaming and prescription lenses. Legato states that all processing occurs on the device and that the frames contain no cameras or recording capabilities.

The launch follows a $12 million funding round from Village Global, Listen, and Neotribe Ventures. Legato Frames are available via the company's website and select U.S. eye care providers, where they may be covered by vision insurance.
