Joby's Autonomous Milestone Signals Pivot Toward Defense and Logistics

Joby Aviation has completed the first-ever autonomous flight across the United States, according to reporting from TechCrunch. Using a converted Cessna Caravan, the aircraft flew more than 3,100 miles without human pilot intervention, encompassing autonomous navigation, takeoffs, landings, and taxiing. While a pilot remained on board for compliance, the operation was remotely supervised from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina and Joby's California headquarters.

The flight marks a strategic shift for Joby, which is primarily known for its efforts to secure FAA type certification for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) urban air taxis. By demonstrating an autonomy stack that can be retrofitted onto conventional aircraft, Joby is positioning itself for a broader range of missions, including commercial freight transport, disaster response, and medical transport.

This expansion into scalable logistics and defense is supported by several key partnerships and acquisitions. TechCrunch reports that Joby is utilizing a $17 million AFWERX contract from the U.S. Air Force to bring a regional airframe equipped with its autonomy stack to market. In August, Joby further solidified its defense presence by acquiring Ohio-based Resonant Sciences, a producer of sensor and radio frequency systems, for $500 million in cash and stock. Additionally, Joby has entered an agreement with L3Harris Technologies to explore the development of autonomous gas-turbine hybrid vertical take-off and landing aircraft for defense use.
