Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham Faces Protests Over Transgender Sports Stance

Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham is facing public demonstrations following her expressed support for barring transgender athletes from women's and girls' sports, as first reported by The Guardian.

Supporters gathered for rallies outside two consecutive games: one before a matchup against the Seattle Storm and another before a game against the Portland Fire. The Seattle event promoted statewide ballot initiative IL26-638, which aims to prohibit transgender students from participating in girls' athletics in Washington schools. Amy Souza, a co-organizer of the Seattle and Portland events, stated she was acting as a cheerleader for Cunningham and standing in solidarity with teen girls who were harassed while supporting the player.

While Cunningham told The Guardian she is unconcerned by the rallies and views them as an exercise of freedom of speech, other figures have reacted differently. During the game against the Portland Fire, the Moda Center crowd booed Cunningham, and some attendees waved transgender flags. Additionally, the WNBA suspended Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton for five games and issued an undisclosed fine following an exchange with two supporters sitting courtside at Climate Pledge Arena. The Storm issued an apology and reaffirmed its commitment to a respectful environment.

Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White expressed frustration to The Guardian, stating the team wants the focus to remain on basketball and the growth of the team, though she acknowledged these tensions are part of the league's "growth edge."
