Rising willingness to pay for AI and productivity tools signals a pivot from volume-driven growth to revenue generation in one of the world's largest download markets.

India is transitioning from a high-volume, low-revenue app market to a significant hub for monetization, as TechCrunch first reported. According to data from Sensor Tower, Indian consumers spent a record $345 million on mobile apps in the second quarter of this year, representing a 35% increase over the previous year.

While quarterly downloads have remained steady at approximately 6.3 billion since 2023, revenue per download has more than doubled over the last three-and-a-half years. Sensor Tower insights analyst Eve Chen told TechCrunch that this shift is driven by the adoption of digital wallets and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which have reduced friction for in-app purchases and subscriptions.

Non-gaming apps are capturing a growing share of the market, accounting for 68% of India’s mobile app revenue in the first half of 2026, up from 58% three years earlier, Sensor Tower said. Key drivers include productivity and generative AI tools. TechCrunch reports that OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude combined for nearly 83% of India's AI app revenue in Q2. Additionally, Google One emerged as the highest-grossing app of the quarter, while streaming services including JioHotstar, Sony LIV, Crunchyroll, and Amazon Prime Video also saw increased spending.

Despite these gains, India's revenue per download remains a small fraction of that in Japan ($6.10), the U.S. ($4.60), and South Korea ($3.90). However, Chen noted that the trajectory indicates substantial long-term growth potential. Appfigures founder and CEO Ariel Michaeli told TechCrunch that while the AI-fueled surge has slowed—estimating ChatGPT's daily Indian revenue has dropped from roughly $80,000 last October to $60,000 currently—the overall numbers remain staggering.
