The new platform allows users to build browser-based games via text prompts, signaling a shift toward accessible development.

Google Labs has introduced Playground, an experimental AI-powered platform that enables users to create browser-based games using simple text prompts, as TechCrunch first reported. According to TechCrunch, the tool removes the requirement for traditional coding, design, or illustration skills, allowing creators to build 2D or 3D experiences in genres such as racing or trivia.

Users can define gameplay mechanics and visual styles through prompts or upload their own visuals for the AI to transform into assets. The platform supports both single-player and multiplayer modes, and finished projects can be kept private, shared via link, or published to an Explore gallery featuring leaderboards. TechCrunch reports that games created on the platform are compatible with both computers and mobile devices.

Google plans to further expand the platform's capabilities through a future integration with Unity Spark, which TechCrunch notes would provide users with "professional-level" game mechanics and additional 3D tools.

Currently, Playground is available to individuals 18 and up in the U.S. While browsing and playing are free, game generation is managed through a weekly token system. Google One AI subscribers are granted higher usage limits than those on the free tier.

This launch follows a trend of natural-language game creation tools, such as the Build feature released by Roblox in July. The move aligns with Google's ongoing gaming efforts, which include the previous Stadia cloud gaming venture and the current YouTube Playables hub.
