The new tool allows users to build browser-based games via text prompts, signaling a shift toward accessible development.

Google Labs has launched Playground, an AI-powered platform designed to lower the barrier to game creation for users lacking traditional illustration, design, or programming skills. According to TechCrunch, the tool enables creators to build browser-based games using simple text prompts to define mechanics, visual styles, and gameplay.

Users can choose between 2D or 3D formats and single-player or multiplayer experiences, with options to select specific genres like racing or trivia. The platform also supports the upload of custom visuals, which the AI transforms into assets that match the game's art style. Once developed, titles can be played on computers and mobile devices, and creators can publish their work to an Explore gallery featuring leaderboards.

TechCrunch reports that Google plans to integrate Unity Spark in a future update, which would provide users with "professional-level" game mechanics and expanded 3D capabilities. This move places Google in a competitive landscape of AI-assisted tools, such as the Build feature launched by Roblox in July.

Currently available to U.S. users aged 18 and older, Playground utilizes a weekly token system for game generation. While browsing is free, Google One AI subscribers are granted higher usage limits than those on the free tier. This initiative follows Google's previous gaming ventures, including the 2022 Stadia cloud gaming effort and the current YouTube Playables hub.
