CEO Thomas Kurian envisions a single AI agent to orchestrate workflows, though the move centralizes productivity dependencies.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian has announced that Gemini will serve as a "single, universal agent for work," according to reporting from The Register. During the Gemini at Work 2026 event, Kurian stated that the AI has transitioned from following instructions to managing objectives, allowing it to plan work, utilize custom tools, and connect to existing systems to deliver finished results within developer environments, inboxes, and documents.

While presented as a unified surface across Google Workspace apps—including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar—and compatible with various operating systems, the system functions by orchestrating multiple components. Kurian explained that Gemini can dynamically create temporary, job-specific "sub-agents" to handle complex, multi-step tasks. Furthermore, the agent is distinct from the underlying models it employs; it can dynamically select the most appropriate model for a task, drawing from the Gemini family, Anthropic's Claude models, and future private or open models to optimize quality and cost.

Alphabet CEO Sundai Pichai highlighted the scale of adoption, noting that nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers use its AI products, with nearly 500 enterprise customers processing over 1 trillion tokens annually. Pichai specifically cited the Gemini 4 Argon model, which scored 77.9% on the DeepSWE v1.1 coding benchmark, outperforming GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1. Internally, Google reports Gemini 4 Argon increased agentic code submissions by 35% and reduced post-submit rollbacks by 30%.

From an operational standpoint, Kurian emphasized that Gemini inherits existing enterprise governance and security policies. He noted that each agent maintains a separate identity and operates under a pre-set budget. However, The Register noted that managing AI spending remains a broader industry challenge, citing a Wall Street Journal report that AI spending is becoming nearly impossible for businesses to budget.
