Developers Demand Source Attribution Amid AI Integration

A Stack Overflow survey reveals a tension between the heavy daily use of AI tools and a deep skepticism regarding the accuracy of unverified outputs.
While AI tools are becoming staples of the developer workflow, a significant trust gap remains regarding the provenance of generated technical answers. According to a survey conducted by Stack Overflow, which gathered responses from 30,903 developers and technologists in 169 countries, 79% of respondents view source attribution as important or very important when deciding whether to trust AI-generated technical information.
Reporting from The Register indicates that while 66% of respondents use coding assistants and 63% utilize general-purpose chat tools, confidence in the output is low. Only 7% of developers trust AI for important work decisions, though 48% trust it if the output is easily verifiable. Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar stated that transparency and rich technical context are essential for earning developer trust as AI agents become more autonomous.
This demand for attribution underscores the friction surrounding the monetization of human-curated knowledge. The Register reports that Stack Overflow faced user backlash after partnering with OpenAI to allow the company to train models on 15 years of user contributions. Some users expressed a preference to delete their posts and lose reputation scores rather than have their work used by OpenAI. In response to these tensions, Stack Overflow introduced OverflowAPI in early 2024, a paid access model that requires AI providers to attribute answers to specific posts.
