Cybersecurity Capital Surge Signals Shift Toward AI-Native Defense

Investors are pouring nine-figure checks into startups as the traditional human-in-the-loop security model fails to scale.

A surge in cybersecurity valuations and investment is reflecting a fundamental shift in how enterprises must approach defense. According to TechCrunch, investors are directing massive amounts of capital into startups building security for an AI-native world, with companies such as Simile and Instinct securing nine-figure checks and valuations that would have been considered unrealistic in previous years.

Shardul Shah, a partner at Index Ventures, suggests that the traditional cybersecurity model is breaking. Shah, who invested in six consecutive rounds of the cloud security startup Wiz—which Google acquired for $32 billion earlier this year—argues that periodic, human-in-the-loop security is no longer capable of keeping pace with modern threats.

Because of these architectural failures, Index Ventures is continuing to invest in AI-native security companies at stages that previously would have required significantly more proof of concept. This shift comes amid rising concerns regarding rogue agents and AI safety, driving a market where the goal is to move beyond legacy systems toward automated, AI-driven security frameworks.
