Colorado Avalanche Shut Out of NHL Top 150 Prospect Rankings

The Colorado Avalanche are facing scrutiny over a depleted prospect pool after failing to place a single player on Scott Wheeler of The Athletic's latest ranking of the NHL's top 150 young players and prospects, as Sports Illustrated first reported. Reporting from Sports Illustrated notes that Colorado was one of only two organizations omitted from the list, alongside the Florida Panthers.

This follows a similar trend from July, when Wheeler's ranking of the top 100 drafted prospects also excluded the Avalanche. The top 150 list encompasses players under 23, ranging from established stars like Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini to undeveloped prospects. Sports Illustrated highlights that Calum Ritchie, who was traded to the New York Islanders in March 2025 as part of a deal for Brock Nelson, did make the list in the 5A tier.

Sports Illustrated attributes this deficit to a long-term "win-now" strategy led by Joe Sakic, which prioritized using draft picks and prospects as currency to build a roster around stars such as Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon.

To counter this narrative, the Avalanche have released a Rookie Faceoff roster for upcoming games against the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks on Sept. 12 and 13. Key players to watch include Ilya Nabokov, undrafted free agent T.J. Hughes, as well as Alex Gagne and Sean Behrens. The organization is seeking affordable, dependable depth to support its core, which includes Martin Necas and Makar, who is signed through 2034.
