The conference avoids exclusivity in a new partnership that prioritizes flexibility and ad-revenue sharing over a legacy broadcast lock-in.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has entered a strategic media rights partnership with Urban Edge Network (UEN) and Van Wagner, signaling a shift toward a more agile distribution model. According to reporting from Sports Illustrated, the deal sends four regular-season football games, three regular-season basketball games, and select conference championships to UEN's digital platforms.

Unlike traditional legacy commitments, the agreement contains no exclusivity language. Hardy L. Pelt, founding member and chief revenue officer of UEN, told HBCU Legends that the structure allows the CIAA to maintain freedom as other media commitments expire. This flexibility is evident in the inventory; the CIAA Basketball Tournament is excluded from the 2027 package, and several championships remain under contract with other networks.

Economically, the deal utilizes a hybrid model. Pelt told HBCU Legends that UEN will pay the CIAA for the media rights and distribute a "significant portion" of ad revenue back to the conference and its member schools. While the specific dollar figures were not disclosed, the partnership leverages UEN's programmatic video advertising and dynamic ad insertion to target niche audiences.

Production responsibilities are split between the CIAA and UEN, with Van Wagner serving as a co-producing partner and controlling the rights to most games headed to the platform. The partnership begins with an initial one-year strategic period, though Pelt described the term as running "up to three years," and the announcement noted an option to extend for an additional three years.

This move follows the June 30 expiration of the CIAA's agreement with HBCU GO. Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker previously described the league as lacking a "sustained media partner" in July, but the current UEN deal allows the conference to retain its own digital network and maintain control over its media inventory.
