Chelsea and Tottenham Break 17-Year Transfer Freeze

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached an agreement to move two players, as Sports Illustrated first reported, marking the first time the London rivals have done business since 2009, when Carlo Cudicini was granted a free transfer.

As reported by Sports Illustrated, center back Tosin Adarabioyo will join Tottenham on a permanent transfer for a fee of $9.5 million (£7 million). The move comes as Tottenham sought a replacement for Kevin Danso. Simultaneously, winger Mykhailo Mudryk will join Tottenham on a season-long loan to reunite with former Shakhtar Donetsk manager Roberto De Zerbi. Per Fabrizio Romano, the Mudryk deal includes a loan fee and an optional transfer clause valued at $101.6 million (£75 million).

Sports Illustrated notes that the structure of the deals was influenced by Premier League regulations, which prohibit clubs from having more than one loanee from a single club. This restriction also impacted Chelsea's acquisition of Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, who will be loaned to Crystal Palace.

From a business perspective, the moves highlight a shift in Chelsea's operational strategy. Sports Illustrated reports that the club's ownership group has moved away from refusing to deal with specific clubs, prioritizing financial viability and squad trimming. This follows a pattern of sales to other rivals, including transfers of Jorginho, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke, and Kepa Arrizabalaga to Arsenal, as well as Mason Mount and Andrey Santos to Manchester United, and Mateo Kovačić to Manchester City.

For Chelsea, the Mudryk loan is a strategic effort to recover value on a player who arrived from Shakhtar for $75 million in January 2023 but has struggled, recording 10 goals in 73 matches. The winger is now cleared to play again after a doping investigation led to a 20-month hiatus.
