Florida State coach Mike Norvell is facing increasing job insecurity despite a massive buyout that exceeds $45 million at the conclusion of this season, as Sports Illustrated first reported.
Reporting from Sports Illustrated indicates that while the cost of Norvell's contract previously acted as a safeguard, the program's continued struggles are shifting the calculus. Since being excluded from the 2023 College Football Playoff, the Seminoles have posted an 8–19 record, which includes a 3–14 mark in ACC play. This downward trend was highlighted by a Labor Day defeat to SMU.
Stability at the program further eroded on Monday with the firing of Florida State's athletic director, Michael Alford. Sports Illustrated notes that the university has decided Alford will no longer be involved in decisions regarding Norvell's employment or a potential replacement.
With Florida State attempting to position itself for future conference realignment, the outlet reports that poor on-field performance is becoming unsustainable. Norvell faces a difficult stretch of games, beginning with a trip to Alabama this Saturday, followed by matchups against ranked opponents No. 25 Virginia, No. 23 Louisville, and No. 5 Miami.
