There is also the matter of containment. While the system is designed to extinguish, Bruder admitted to TechCrunch that in tests with lithium-ion battery fires, the system doesn't fully put out the fire but instead contains it. The goal is to prevent cell-to-cell spread and protect the outer casing, limiting the overall size of the blaze.
Ultimately, the $15 million will fund the hiring and testing necessary to satisfy the NFPA. Until those model codes are updated, Sonic Fire Tech remains a promising lab experiment. The real victory won't be the next funding round, but the moment a city building inspector signs off on a PVC pipe system instead of a sprinkler.
