AWS Shifts EC2 Leadership to Retail Veteran

Dave Treadwell, former head of Amazon Retail's eCommerce Foundation, takes the helm of EC2 as 19-year veteran Dave Brown departs.

Amazon Web Services is changing the leadership of its core compute engine, EC2, as The Register first reported.

Dave Brown, a 19-year veteran of AWS and a member of the company's S-team leadership group, is leaving Amazon for an undisclosed destination. Brown, who served as a primary leader for EC2, is being replaced by fellow S-team member Dave Treadwell.

Treadwell joins the EC2 leadership team from a specialized operational background, having previously served as the head of Amazon Retail's "eCommerce Foundation."

The transition is notable given the historical relationship between the two entities; The Register notes that Amazon Retail was, at one point, one of the largest and most complex customers of AWS. By placing a retail operational leader in charge of the cloud's primary compute service, AWS is positioning a leader who has managed the specific scale and friction points inherent to the world's largest e-commerce operations.
