During a talk to OpenAI staff, the novelist argued that the use of ChatGPT in education strips students of their ability to find their own voices.
Last year, author Dave Eggers used an invitation from Sam Altman to address approximately 200 OpenAI employees, where he delivered a sharp critique of the company's impact on education and creativity.
As The Verge reported, citing the Financial Times, Eggers described the effect of ChatGPT on educators' lives as "catastrophic," stating that the company has made every teacher's life infinitely more difficult than it was two years ago.
Eggers specifically highlighted the danger of students utilizing AI for composition, calling it the "biggest tragedy of all." He argued that relying on these tools prevents students from learning how to write, effectively stealing their voices and robbing them of the capacity to tell their own stories or express their truth. Eggers concluded that this trend is "silencing an entire generation or two."
Known for his novel *The Circle*, which critiques the tech industry, Eggers has previously dismissed AI-generated writing as "pastiche nonsense."
