Forrester research indicates that labor-intensive knowledge work and IT implementation services face severe headwinds as generative AI automates core development tasks.

The traditional economic engine of the tech services sector is facing a significant overhaul. As The Register first reported, research from Forrester indicates that labor-intensive knowledge-work industries are among the most vulnerable to AI disruption, specifically within the realms of software development, business transformation, and technology implementation.

Forrester reports that the rollout of generative AI for code development is directly impacting markets such as application generation, low-code platforms, autonomous testing, and enterprise architecture management suites. The analyst firm notes that the most severe disruption is occurring in business process outsourcing, where software development and testing services are seeing reduced rates.

Furthermore, Forrester highlights that core implementation services for major enterprise platforms—including SAP, Salesforce, Workday, and Oracle—are experiencing headwinds as AI enables direct substitution of traditional labor.

Despite these pressures on services, the broader IT market continues to expand. Gartner has increased its 2026 total IT market estimate to $6.37 trillion, representing a 14.2% year-on-year increase. This growth is bolstered by the technology industry's own investments, which are projected to grow by 34.7% over 2026.

Craig Le Clair, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester, notes that while every technology and service market faces an overhaul, growth is concentrated in three specific categories: data and AI, infrastructure, and identity, access, and network security. Other categories, such as customer experience and process automation, must adapt as AI transforms workflows, though they remain relevant due to regulatory requirements and switching costs.
